How the risk is actually calculated

This calculator uses the ASCVD Pooled Cohort Equations published by the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association in 2013 — the same math your primary care doctor's clinical decision support uses.

It combines your sex, age, race, cholesterol, blood pressure, and three yes/no factors into a single 10-year probability. Nothing you type is stored — the calculation runs in your browser.

Common questions

How accurate is this calculator?

The ASCVD Pooled Cohort Equations were derived from five large U.S. cohort studies and are the current standard used in ACC/AHA prevention guidelines. They perform best in adults 40–79 without prior cardiovascular disease. Accuracy varies for people whose demographics were under-represented in the source cohorts.

Is the ASCVD equation still current?

The 2013 Pooled Cohort Equations remain the anchor of the 2019 ACC/AHA Primary Prevention guideline and are used across U.S. clinical decision support. Newer models such as PREVENT (2023) exist and are being adopted alongside; we plan to add a PREVENT calculator once its guidance is fully settled.

Can I use this if I already have heart disease?

No. This tool estimates PRIMARY prevention risk. If you've already had a heart attack, stroke, stent, or coronary bypass, your care plan should be built around secondary-prevention guidance, not this score.

What data do you collect?

Nothing about your health inputs is sent to a server. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. We use a privacy-first analytics setup that records only the page you're on — no cookies, no cross-site tracking.

What if I'm under 40 or over 79?

The Pooled Cohort Equations were not derived on people outside 40–79, so the estimate isn't reliable there. Under 40, your 10-year risk is almost always low even with risk factors — the more useful conversation is lifetime risk. Over 79, a physician should weigh the score against your overall health.
